Welcome to 2009

After many attempts to get into this Blog I have finally gotten it to work.

Now I can tell you all what is happening in class each week.

Due to last weeks snow day we will be having our spelling test on KN-WR-GH-PH on Tuesday of next week. We are reading Mr. Putter and Tabby Write a Book and willalso take that comprehension test on Tuesday.

In math we are working on Surveys. If you noticed we did a Pocket survey in class. Many of the children did not understand the concept so we will be working on it again this week.

We are finishing our Science Unit on Balancing and will now be working on Weighing. We have built our own scales and are experimenting with different items to find their weight and compare them to other objects as to which is lighter and which is heavier== <  >.

I would like to Thank You all for coming in to conference on Thursday. For anyone who was unable to come I will be able to see you this Thursday from 3 until 5. I’ll put a notice in the homework book for you to let me know what is good for you. If you would like I could also call and talk with you, just let me know your number and when would be a good time to call.

Welcome to 2008 – 2009

Welcome and Hello to everyone!

Well it is that time of year again.

I know you are just as happy as I am to be returning to Pleasantville.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you. Remember to bring with you your summer work packets, pencil box, crayons, 2 pencils, scissors, and a deck of playing cards.  That is all you will need to start the year.

I will be sending home a list of materials that you we need for the rest of the year.

So get all the fun in that you can.

May 19th – 23rd

This week is going to fly by.
We are reading the story Dinosaurs Travel.
With this story we will be  working with more State of Being Verbs Come,Came,Run and Ran.
In Spelling we are working with the Letter C  that gives and S sound. Our words are cent,city,once,place,cell,circus,since,center,circle,nice,practice and sentence. Our Vocabulary words are luggage,companion,sturdy,cassette, and relatives.
We will be  taking the district math test all week.
Our Soils unit will end with the field trip to Coverdale Farm on Thursday. We will be leaving promtly at 9:00.
Please check the weather report in the morning to dress the students in the proper outfit. Remember we are going to a FARM there is no inside or heat.
There are out side portapotties and and outside sink to wash there hands.
We will be working in the SOIL and petting various animals. If is is a bright sunny day there will be insects so cover them in bug and sun spray. I hope all the children enjoy the trip and have wonderful things to share with you.
Finally Friday is a half day so will will be taking the reading ,spelling and vocabulary tests and then packing up for a wonderful Memorial Day Vacation. Hope you all enjoy the 3 day vacation.

May 5th – 9th

We have finished the 5th theme in the reading series. Yea!!!!
We are reviewing all the skills all week.
We will be taking the Theme Test reviews on Friday.
We are also working on Dibels Testing for reading and will take the Stars Test.
Next week we will also be taking the end of year Math Assessments.
We only have 3 more stories and the year will be over.
So just hold on tight these last weeks can be exciting, stressful and go by so fast that your head will spin.

April 28 – May 2nd

Welcome to Polar Express Week.

`My class will be doing activities about Japan. Ms. Hopkins our Title #1 teacher has been to Japan an loves to share her knowledge with the students about the culture, language, writing an customs. The students will then move on to the other  2 nd grade teachers to explore Hawaii. Tanzania and Mexico.  All the students love this day an we usually extend some of the activities through the week

In reading we will be reading Anthony Reynoso Born to Rope. This story is about a boy from New Mexico, his family an customs.

Our spelling this week has to do with Contractions..don’t,I’ve,we’re,I’ll,they’ll,can’t,you’ll,we’ll,you’re,they’ll,they’re, and wouldn’t.

Our Vocabulary words are thousands,ranch,exhibition,dappled, and landscaping business.

We are also working with State of Being Verbs. Last week we used am,is,was,are, and were. this week we are adding have,has,and had.

Math we are finishing Guess My Rule, Money, an graphs.

In Science we are starting our Soils Unit and this week we will be looking at our WORMS. Just in case one ends up in a book-bag….PLEASE send him or her back to school we will need them all for our Composting.

December 10 – 14

Well it is December the month that puts stress in capital letters.

This week we are reading the story, What makes Day and Night. We will be going to the planetarium at McCullough on Wednesday the 12th. While we are there we will be looking at the night sky and investigating the constellations we can see in the winter months. Please return the permission slip so that everyone can attend.There is no charge for this trip but I need your permission to take your child.

This weeks Spelling words are phone,laugh, elephant, telegraph,  photo, phrase, graph,rough,enough,photograph,telephone, and tough.                                 

Our Vocabulary words are spin, experiment, toward, motion, imagine, and photograph.

In math, we have been investigation rectangles, sides,angles-corners. We are also making arrays to show different ways to make number problems. This is a first step into understanding multiplication.

On Monday we will be starting our Science unit on Balance and Weighing.

Last Thursday I sent home mid-term reports. There is still 4 more weeks to the marking period so that all the students have time to improve their grades.

I am well aware of how stressful this time of year can be. If something comes up and work can not get done just let me know with a note in the planner and all will be right with the world.

Smart Kids Day 2007

Today was the world famous day that that we all wait for with nervous anticipation.

Smart Kids Day again this year was a huge success. All the second graders had a fabulous time investigating Dissolving, Floating, Weighing, and Tasting.

The first and second place winners are

Lance and Ashley 2nd place with 325 pennies

Everyone did a fantastic job working together to solve the problems.

November 13 – 20

I t was great meeting with all of you last week. thank you again for your time. I am sure you student will benefit from all the efforts you have been putting in to their education.

Last week the Ashland presentation came to our class bring with them many interesting creatures for us to look, touch and feel. here are a few pictures.

On November 20, Ashland will returning with a presentation about Native Americans from our area. They will be allowing the students to dress in native clothing, prepare food, make instruments, and make clay pots. It is a very interesting presentations and the children do love it.

We will be reading about Johnny Appleseed – Johnny Chapman. Our spelling words will be ear- eer words, near, deer, year, rear, clear, hear, beard, spear, fear, dear. cheer, and appear.

Our vocabulary words will be survive, frontier, nearby, wild, tame, which, and orchards.

The story is written in play form so the students will be given parts to read and memorize so that we can put on a short play for our first graders.

In math we are starting a unit on Geometry. The students will be investigating shapes for their faces-sides, and angles-corners.

Our school is also collecting Pennies for Alzheimer’s Association. The students will have a chance to earn prizes by making estimation guesses to see how many pennies were collected for their grade and for the entire school.

November 5 – 9

Welcome to Conference Week.

I am looking forward to meeting with all of you during this week. I will be going over the students portfolios and answering any questions you have. If for any reason you can not make your conference please call the school 323-2935 as soon as possible. I may be able to reschedule your time or day.

Monday will be our only regular day of school. Starting on Tuesday school will let out at 12:35. Conferences start at 1:00.

During this week I will be reviewing the past five spelling and grammar units. I am also going to start reading centers. This weeks homework is going to be to review the spelling journal and more math story problems with money review.

When you come in be sure to see our silkworms 4 of them have spun themselves into their cocoons. The rest are still eating  and growing daily. October 29th – November 2nd

This weeks story is Hedgehog Bakes a Cake. Tomorrow the students will be getting into groups of 4 and making some cupcakes of their own. Keep your fingers crossed.

Our spelling words this week are words with k and ck,bark, look, black, took, clock,book, duck, rock, pick, stick, and work.

Our vocabulary words are batter, yellow cake, buttery, perfect, recipe, and smeared.

 In math we are working on doubling. We will be reading the Magic Pot and making our own pots that can magically double anything that we put into it.

On Wednesday the Ashland Nature Society will visit us bringing along with them some of their most interesting creepy crawly friends.

I sent home all the conference conformation notices on Thursday and Friday. Unless you have a problem or a concern I will be here waiting to visit with you on your day and time. If any problems come up please call the school 323-2975 and let us know so we can reschedule your time.
