October 22 — 26

Monday night is Math Night. I am hoping that you can come along with your child. Your child will be the teacher and will show you how to play 2 different math games. You may also go to other grade levels to see how all of this ties together. Each game is taught with the intention to involve your child in mathematics in a fun way and at the same time get them to understand mathematical concepts.

Our reading story this week is Lemonade for Sale. This story deals with making and reading a graph. during the week I will be giving the students other work involving graph making and reading.

Our spelling words this week are corn, shore, your, more, born, store, short, north, four, story, corner,and before.

Our vocabulary words this week are stand, glum, announced, arrived, members, and rebuild.

Last week in social studies we make a model of a globe and are working on a step book about our place on the globe. This week we will be making a map of our classroom.

October 15 – 19

Last week was very exciting for our class. All 7 of our Monarch larvae went into their chrysalis and came out in our habitat as beautiful butterflies.We released them on Wednesday. We are all hoping that they make it to Mexico in time for the Monarch Festival.monarch-butterfly_large.jpg

Our new unit will be Geography. We will be looking at maps and making some maps of our own.

Our new reading story is Mr. Putter and Tabby Fly a Plane. We will be working on sequencing along with plural nouns. Our vocabulary words are crane, twitch,worry, directions, and promise.

Our spelling words are words with ou and ow. They are now, sound, out, mouth, cloud, town, clown, found, outside,  crowd, around, and mouse. 

In math we have learned 3 math games that the students can share with you at home. Ask your child to show you how to play Go Fish 10, the Memory game and Add 1 or 2 Bingo. I hope you will be able to come to our Family Math night ,October 22nd from 6:30 to 8, where we will be sharing with the parents our math games.

October 1

Welcome to October and welcome to Fall.

I for one am looking forward to the cool temperatures that fall usually brings.

This week the students have been told is a review Testing week.

The spelling words and the vocabulary words that they have received so far are going to be reviewed and used all week long.

They will bring the spelling journal home each night to practice.

We will also have a new member to our classroom Ms. Fasten who is a student from Wilmington University. She will be with us for this term helping with reading centers and giving extra help when needed.

This week in science we will be watching closely our Monarch Larvae. With any luck and kindness they will all live and change right before our eyes.

I have also given each student a Book It form. Each student is to read 11 books in the month of October. When they have done this they are to return the form to be signed by you and they will receive a coupon from Pizza Hut.

September 24–28

Thank you to all of you that took the time to come to the Open House last week. I am well aware of how hard it is to fit one more activity into your week. I hope you all had a good time and enjoyed the time spent in your child’s room.

dscf0032.JPGLast week our mealworms arrived. All the children were very excited about their new friends. We will be watching their changes and taking care of our mealworms for the next several weeks.

Our Story this week is The Mixed-Up Chameleon. Our vocabulary words will be spotted, hardly, handsome, sparkling, dull, sideways, and exciting.

Spelling words this week are words with long a. They will be train, pay, paint, eight, nail, stay, weigh, sail, wait, away, and maybe.

In math we have been working on trading coins to make 25 cents. When you are shopping ask your child how many ways can they make 25 and what can they trade to make 25 cents with different coins.

The second grade team has put together a visit from Ashland Nature Center to share with the students some creepy crawly creatures. Information about this experience will be coming home in the near future.

Please keep checking your students homework book and folder every night.

September 10 — 14

Our first full week of school. Good luck to all of us.

This week we are  reading Days with Frog and Toad.

I am hoping to get all the children to take a comprehension test on the computer on Friday.

Our spelling words for the week are Long o

pony,boat,yellow,so,open,own,coat,told,snow,toad,window,coast

Our vocabulary words for the week are

meadow,fine,spoiled,cheer,reason,alone

Grammar we are looking into Commands and Exclamations.

Our math unit we are investigating numbers.

In science our unit is about insects. We will be working with mealworms, silkworms, and Monarch butterflies.

Please check your child’s homework book each night.
